Year 1: P5 – Trigonometry
P5.1 Trigonometry
Step One:
Learn
The first video in the series on Trigonometry. This video reminds viewers about sine and cosine rule with some worked examples of how to use them
This video in the series on trigonometry looks at what is referred to as the ‘ambiguous case of sine rule’ where it is possible to draw two different triangles given a set of information and hence why it is possible to get two answer when calculating the size of an angle
Step Two:
Check
Review your trig skills from GCSE ready for the next steps to trig at A level
P5.2 Trigonometric curves
Step One:
Learn
Step Two:
Check
Building on from GCSE anytime you get a trig question to solve, you will need to give all the possible answers in a given range. Unfortunately, you calculator will only give you one – the principle value – you need to be able to find the others. This quiz will check you know how to do that.
P5.3 Trigonometric equations
Step One:
Learn
This video from the trigonometry section of the Year 1 content looks at solving linear trig equations and in particular also emphasises how to find all possible solutions in a given range. Later in the video, we introduce the first of the trig identities; sinx/cosx=tanx
This video extend the use of trig identities and introduces the link between sin squared and cos squared. It uses this to solve equations by reducing the equation to a single trig ratio and then factorising.
This video from the trigonometry section of the Year 1 course focuses on how you can write the sin, cos or tan of an angle using surds for specific values. It goes on to look at how to use a value of one ratio given as a fraction, to find the value of the others, without the need to find the angle.
Step Two:
Check
Here you’ll be applying your knowledge of trig functions from the previous section (P5.2) as well as the new identities.
Step Three:
Apply
